Diary of Hamlet Haines

The following is an excerpt of Hamlet Haines’ original diary from 1908 to 1960. The diary was donated to the Museum by the Haines family of OB Flat (in 2012). Having researched further background information, the story of the Haines’ family is briefly presented. From 2014 to 2018, Hamlet’s diary entries from 4 August 1914 until 11 November 1918 will be uploaded, as a tribute to the life of Cephas Haines, AIF (KIA, 1916), in this centenary year of the beginning of World War One. The first instalment is from 04 August 1914, the commencement of World War One, to 25 April 1915, the landing at Gallipoli.
Lest We Forget.

The Haines family, of ‘Sandy Waterhole’, lower Glenelg River Victoria, is an old pioneering family.
Albert Haines, born 10 July 1846 at Alderbury, Wiltshire, England came to South Australia on the ‘Lysander’ – landing at Port Adelaide on 23 September 1850. He was with his parents James and Ann [nee Ratchue/Rattew] Haines . They settled initially in the Nairne district, followed by a brief, fruitless stint at the Snowy River goldfields, before returning to Nairne. Albert learned agricultural skills and moved to Mount Gambier in 1863 to work on several surrounding regional pastoral stations.

His wife, Eliza Gust Wyatt, also came from the ‘Old Country’, born 16 August 1849 in London to George Duck and Emma [nee Gust] Wyatt. They landed at Portland in 1853, and after residing there for ten years, they went to Mount Gambier, South Australia. Her father operated a livery stable and wheelwright business, and became the second mayor of Mount Gambier. She met Adam Lindsay Gordon and claimed to have danced with him , but also met and fell in love with Albert who was indentured to her father as an apprentice wheelwright; they married at the Church of England on 1 January 1870.

A couple of years later, Albert returned to farming on a selection near Bordertown, then dabbled in his trade at Sale and Bruthen in Gippsland, and finally Millicent. In 1896 he took up part of the former Glencoe Station at Lake Leake, then in 1904 moved to Sandy Waterhole on the north bank of the lower Glenelg River, three miles from the South Australian border and about 18 miles to the south-west of Dartmoor. He obtained the property from John Phillip of ‘Ascot Heath’ and just after purchase was greeted by an old pioneer in Mount Gambier who said – “Well, I hear you have purchased Sandy Water Holes,” and then proceeded to detail how many people the place had ruined… according to the sage, no less than six! Albert was quite down-hearted and began to wonder if he would be the next victim. However, he was determined to do his level best to make the place pay. For the first 18 years he had to pay £72 per year interest, and the lump sum of £1.200 to complete the purchase .

He devoted it mainly to the grazing of Merino sheep. The locality was fast becoming a popular tourist resort for the enchanting scenery and excellent fishing of perch, bream and other species. The family were involved in boat-building and boat-hiring to capitalise on the trade.

In 1924 Albert semi-retired to Yahl, then Millicent for the three years prior to his death on 14 April 1936 . He was buried there the same day. Emma died at Mount Gambier and was buried at Millicent on 16 December 1943.

The family were involved with the Salvation Army and had the following issue :
1. Albert James, born 22 January 1871, died 15 April 1946. [Served in 5th Contingent, Boer War. Married Agnes Campbell 1903.]
2. George Lewis, born 18 June 1873. [Married Sarah Harrison 1902.]
3. Frances Georgina Ann, born 20 October 1875, died 1917. [Married Robert Humphries 1896.]

8. Millicent Maria, born 22 July 1889. [Married James Cram 1914.]
9. Ellen Delphine, born 22 June 1892, died 20 August 1892.
10. Wallis Wilfred Vincent, born 11 November 1895. [Married.]

The family property passed to son Hamlet Haines who continued to graze the land, run a small dairy, and hire out boats for tourists . But most amazingly as a legacy, kept a diary of daily activities throughout his adult life, including the period 1914-1918 while his beloved brother Cephas was fighting and dying at the Great War.

  1. Many thanks for making these diaries available to the community Michael. I read them with great interest as I was able to remember many of the people named in it.
My father Cephas James Cram was born to Jack and Milly Cram (Hamlet’s sister) on the 24th of April 1915 the day before the Gallipoli landing. Hamlet would not have been aware of these two events which occurred on the last 2 days of his diary entries so far.
I look forward to the next update!
    Regards, Alvin Cram (Portland)

  2. Thank you for making these available. Extremely interesting to read and connect to information I have researched about my great great great Uncle Cephas. Just curious if there are any diary entries around the time that Cephas was injured in the escape from Gallipoli and sent on furlough or after recovery sent to western front to pozierrres where he was killed in action by a shell?

  3. Very interesting reading, with lots of work to be done, on the mixed farm of days gone by. The Ellard brothers who supplied the chaff cutter are my great uncles! I look forward to the next instalment.
